  • Safety and Infection Control: the nurse protects clients and health care personnel from health and environmental hazards.

The nurse provides and directs nursing care of the client that incorporates knowledge of expected growth and development; prevention and early detection of health problems, and strategies to achieve optimal health.

The nurse provides and directs nursing care that promotes and supports the emotional, mental, and social well-being of the client experiencing stressful events, as well as clients with acute or chronic mental illness.

The nurse promotes physical health and wellness by providing care and comfort, reducing client risk potential, and managing health alterations.

NCLEX-RN, which stands for National Council Licensure Examination, refers generally to one of the two standardized tests nurses need to pass in order to become either a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a registered nurse (RN). 10

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is an independent, not-for-profit organization through which nursing regulatory bodies act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting public health, safety and welfare, including the development of nursing licensure examinations. 11

  • Complete an accredited nursing program
  • Apply for a license with your state board
  • Register for the NCLEX-RN exam you wish to take
  • Take and pass the NCLEX-RN
  • Complete any additional state requirements and get licensed 12

The NCLEX-RN exams are computer adaptive tests (CATs), meaning the questions you receive are in direct response to the questions you previously answered. If you get an answer wrong, the next question will be slightly easier. Get an answer right and the next question will be a little more difficult. With each question you answer, the computer’s estimate of your abilities gets more precise. 13

Nursing is a fulfilling career where individuals support and take care of others’ health needs. Licensure indicates nurses are qualified and ready to begin their careers, as it demonstrates that the nurse has demonstrated content competence. In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of health related topics, most nurses receive a salary boost corresponding to their new license. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, registered nurses earn a median annual salary of around $75,000 as of 2021. 14
